What Is An Automatic External Defibrillator?
An Automatic External Defibrillator or AED is an easy-to-use, automated device which delivers a life-saving electric shock to the heart to halt rapid and chaotic heart activity, commonly known as Sudden Cardiac Arrest, and restores normal heart rhythm. AEDs are designed to be used by non-medically trained personnel.

What are the concerns for liability in having
an AED?

There are really no concerns for liability for the use and placement of an AED. There is a “Good Samaritan Law” in place in the state of California for the use and placement of AEDs throughout the state. This law is known as AB2041 (click here for law). There are minor stipulations required in the law to ensure the freedom from liability. San Diego Project Heart Beat helps to cover those stipulations by the services that they offer for (Phase II) program management.

Can I purchase an AED for my home?
Absolutely, there are lesser stipulations for an AED that is purchased strictly for home use. In this situation it is required to obtain a prescription from a Medical Doctor or Cardiologist whose care the purchaser is under.

Do we have to have a Medical Doctor oversee
our device?

Yes. This is a medical device and current FDA regulations require it.

What extended costs are there once I purchase an AED?
Two, mainly for the AED unit itself. Disposable electrode pads (one time use) need to be replaced typically every two years and batteries. Time for replacement, warranty and cost vary for batteries (contact your AED manufacturer).
Other costs can include annual or bi-annual certification training and program management service costs.

Is training included as part of the Program Management Sevice Costs?
A: No, CPR/AED training is offered through our official American Heart Association Training Center.
Please check the Training section of this site for more information.

Do I have to be certified to use an AED?
No, anyone can use this simple life saving device however, someone who is on site during most normal hours of operation must have current certified training in CPR/AED in accordance with the amount of AEDs at the site in order to stay compliant with the law that governs these programs (AB2041). These devices were specifically manufactured for the non-medically trained lay rescuer. The SDPHB Training Center offers this 2 year certification through the American Heart Association.

Is Refresher Training required annually?
Yes, all certified persons must receive Refresher Training in the use of the AED once a year. A variety of options are available for ease of accomplishing this task. SDPHB Training Center offers a comprehensive 2 hour Refresher course which is usually completed the year between the 2 year certification training. This Refresher Training will also be available for purchase in a DVD presentation soon.

How do I enroll in a Training Course for CPR/AED certification or AED refresher?
Just go to the Training section of this site and select course enrollment or contact the Training Center directly.
